"IEFN: Together we can change the façade of Nepal"
Despite the numerous and various donor – assisted development efforts that have been carried out over the past five decades, social disparity and poverty in Nepal has expanded and deepened. Neither words nor pictures can fully describe the incredible devastation, as well as the pain and agony of the Nepalese. A chronicle of everyday life in Nepal would record with horror and admiration the monumental task of rebuilding shattered lives and the will to survive of millions of people impacted by the social instability, disease, poverty and environmental degradation.
A sluggish growth rate of the overall economy, unemployment, high illiteracy rate and overall inefficiency in the management or resources have been identified as some of the reasons for such a sad situation. The performances of development projects are negatively affected by problems like implementation delays, inadequate disbursements and lack of beneficiary involvement in the decision making process, as well as by weakness in project design and implementation. These issues have been bought to light by many reviews and studies, and they point to an urgent need to take corrective measures to improve the situation.
Hence, considering this, IEFN believes that development – basically – is “change”: change in thinking and living. Since we do not know how and when change occurs, nor where it begins and ends, we believe in process. We believe that change is possible through education and we believe that education is the another name of development. Furthermore, we believe that poverty and social disparity is a multi – faceted phenomenon, and it is very difficult to select which issues are important as all the factors are equal in their own micro climate.
Nonetheless, instead of blaming the Government, the World Bank, NGOs and other stake holders of the development, we have developed a model, a simple model focusing on this question, “Where are our successes and what have we done to our failures? What is the IEFN model? Stay back and wait, it will be revealed gradually.
One of the lessons we have learned is that the un-empowered and the needy poor do not receive the benefit of subsidies. Therefore, the first step is that the poor need to be empowered. For this, they need a supportive environment, be it economic, legal or institutional. This is a long process. But the time has come for us to ask “What do we need to do now in order to take part in the world that is being built?”
Everyone talks about the problems, endlessly, but we generally do not hear much about the solutions. Who has the solution? Has Nepal reached a stage of hopelessness? IEFN says no; it is still not too late, provided Nepal borrows according to her absorption capacity and strikes the right micro- economic educational chords.
Finally, IEFN was not founded only for the advancement and the globalization of knowledge and to guide and provide placement services to those students who are willing to pursue their further studies abroad in a vast array of universities worldwide. IEFN was founded to serve the society through its wide arrays of micro educational ventures too.
Since its founding, IEFN has primarily focused on various micro educational activities that perfectly go in tandem with its broad macro economic policy framework built for the betterment of Nepal as a whole. Some of the IEFN activities are as follows.
Tuition classes for the underprivileged children by the underprivileged student/teachers financed by the IEFN.
- Recreation facilities (Poetry, Painting, Short Stories, etc) for the underprivileged students.
- Effective Targeting, Participation and Partnership Building to Enhance Education for All.
- Exposure of the special talents possessed by the underprivileged students to the world.
-
Working towards the establishment of the Community library.
